Penalty shoot-out's?

Lets get one thing straight.

The efforts of Lord Mawhinney and his cohorts over the past few years have done an incredible amount of good for the British game.

We now have the bizarre situation that find our second-tier division (the Championship), as commercially the fourth-biggest league in Europe.

That is a stunning achievement, and it's not just down to Sky's millions.

Further down the divisions the development in the game and the respect that is shown to clubs that go well past Football League stage is to be applauded.

So why after all of that good work make a mockery of all the good vibes and plaudits by rolling out this idiotic idea of finishing drawn matches with penalty shoot-outs.

It's not baffling, it's not bizarre, it's not challenging.

It's downright STUPID.

I won't even go into the in's and out's of it, suffice to say there are some ideas that shouldn't even make it past the censors.

Stuff like this isn't designed for 'rational debate', or 'to get people talking' - it's pure attention seeking that instead backfires spectacularly to make our game and the people who run sections of our game look incredibly daft.

Well ... job done.

Step forward Lord Mawhinney ... and please, step down soon after.

I agree with you, James, about the absurdity of Mawhinney´s notion. But the guy doesn´t really have football at heart, his involvement is a Machiavellian attempt to land the FA chairman´s post. It shouldn´t come as a surprise to find a Tory who doesn´t care about sport. After all, when the Conservatives were last in power, they sold off a vast number of school playing fields - which has an obvious negative effect on the number of young footballers coming through, for example.
