The Spirit Of Bryan Griffiths

It's time for a new cult hero at the JJB. I don't know if we've ever had one since we moved from Springfield Park. Still, nostalgia's a great thing, and so some half time reminiscing last Sunday gave me a cunning plan.

Bryan Griffiths scored the winner on the first of my few visits to Springfield Park (1-0 v Stoke, also a penalty). Difficult to imagine many of today's players giving a V-sign, perhaps Craig Bellamy, but then you can't imagine him being a cult hero to anyone...

With the odd exception, players don't really care about who they play for these days, and as much as they may talk about 'bragging rights in the office on Monday' in a pre-derby interview, most aren't interested in that side of things anymore. Perhaps that's why clubs like Wigan have numerous fans who long for the grim old days again, with trips to the toilets at Saltergate and things like that to get them going. Back then more players were local (and admittedly shite) and so cared about derbies and local pride.
