The winning feeling

Watford fans have almost forgotten how it feels to win a football match. Thankfully, Tuesday night was our chance to celebrate an elusive success. Toppling Blackburn 2-1 was certainly not on the cards. Unless of course you realised Dermot Gallagher was our referee during our only other Premiership win, against Middlesbrough this season. So his appearance at Vicarage Road was very welcome.
It was promising to see us get a result on the day Ashley Young’s move to Villa was confirmed. Hopefully Aidy has some signings up his sleeve because the squad looks too brittle to manage the remainder of the season. But at least we have something to build on and maybe just maybe we won’t be relegated by March!

The great Ashley Young debate

Will Ashley Young still be at Watford on the weekend? It’s touch and go but his rejection of West Ham indicates the esteem he holds for Aidy and the club.
Young clearly loves playing for the Hornets and it will take an attractive offer to prise him away from Vicarage Road. The club in question is probably Spurs and I think he would be tempted by a move to White Hart Lane.
But the move would not suit him initially. I am unconvinced he would break into their side and a regular place on the bench will do nothing for his career.
Staying at Watford until the summer would be the wise option and a departure then would be favourable for all parties.
And the transfer fee? No he isn’t worth the money. But how many decent players have gone for over the odds? Shaun Wright-Phillips, Glen Johnson and perhaps even Dean Ashton are just a few examples of overpriced footballers in the market.
Young has got plenty going for him; he’s young by name and nature, English, scores goals and has a good turn of pace. It is no surprise that he has been so hotly pursued this January.
And although he can’t justify a 10 million pound fee currently, he has every chance of warranting it in the future. Young will play for England and could be an answer to the perennial left sided problem for our country.
So Watford are within their right to charge what they want for him. And judging by the interest in him it sounds like they’ll probably get it.

Laughable Liverpool

Funny old game football! Sitting down to watch the Liverpool V Arsenal Carling Cup Quarter Final I expected a decent game. But not a nine goal feast! 4-1 down by half time, Liverpool eventually surrendered 6-3 to the young Gunners. So Liverpool head to Vicarage Road in the midst of a crisis. Well it’s hardly that terminal. But Rafael Benitez is certainly facing another critical period. Two years ago the Liverpool boss was facing similar sniping by the press after a woeful domestic run. They were about to play us in the League Cup. Liverpool overcame us and went on to win the Champions League. Caution should be urged before writing off Benitez again. But it certainly showed the dearth in quality of the Red’s youth squad in comparison to the speed and strength of Arsenal’s reserves. A good time to play them this Saturday perhaps?
