Back to the Cup

Having struggled to find a way past (and stay past) West Brom in the first game, it's a tough trip to the Hawthorns tomorrow night (Tuesday).

Having negotiated a pretty unsturdy route past Bristol City in the previous round, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if this is a prelude to a superb Cup run that would end up at Wembley.

How many times have we seen it in the past where sides clambour through the early rounds - penalty shoot-outs, replays, the lot, and then end up winning the thing.

Can only hope it's a sign!

The simple things

Relieved to see Boro get back to doing the simple things this afternoon.

Despite the basic principles of Gareth Southgate we still tend to over-complicate I think at times, but there was an assured basicness about our performance today, and at last we gained revenge for that 3-2 defeat at the Madjeski on the first day of the season.

Interesting to see Jon Oster could his first Premiership goal in A DECADE today for the visitors, though the winning margin could and probably should have been greater by the end.

Job done though Boro, well done.

Yeah it's starting to look a bit tighter now and Arca has been the difference for me. He's doing what Zenden did a couple of seasons ago in working hard and creating in midfield. It's solid too with Cattermole and Boateng around him and Downing is creating everything for the front two. Too late for a Eufa place in the Premiership (unless we win about 8 of our last 10) but a good cup run would be fantastic. Credit to Gareth who has proved everyone wrong and has learnt a lot this year to take us into next season. It has always been Boro's way to develop local talent as we haven't the cash of the bigger clubs, and Gareth's appointment is an extension of that. Again credit to Steve Gibson, the best chairman in the Premiership.

Woodgate transfer?

It seems that Real are willing to let him go, but I'm nervous that other factors may come into play before JW can become a Middlesbrough player.

He has been a revelation this season and I only wish Gareth Southgate would come out of retirement to play alongside him!

I'm sure we can find the money to keep him at the Riverside.

Not only does he add a vast amount of experience, but he is an excellent filip for the continuing mass of young local players developing through the ranks.

Next season could be very exciting for the club, especially if JW is around.

JW is a class act, he was fantastic at Newcastle before he was sold to Real. Can understand why the Toon sold him but i would love to see him back at Newcastle next season.

I can see his sale to Boro being hijacked by a 'bigger' club in the summer. I would love that club to be Newcastle but if the Toon can't have/get him then i hope he stays at Boro. The lad could become a legend for his home town club. Just depends what his motives/priorities are? Does he play football at a club who wants him or does he look for a bigger stage?

Racism in football

Just when you think this has calmed down for a while another bout of rumours surface, this time involving Newcastle flog Emre.

The local paper said the following. Begs the question if people are being made scapegoats, whether there is something in this, or as has been raised amongst my friends, is football backchat once again being interpreted for racism? :

"Newcastle star Emre vowed again last night "I am no racist" - as reports accused of him abusing a THIRD black opponent.

And his agent has complained "a campaign" is being waged in England against his client.

Watford's Al Bangura is the latest player to be caught up in the Emre row, amid claims that he was racially abused during a Carling Cup tie against United in November.

The FA are already investigating whether Bolton striker El-Hadji Diouf will make a similar complaint stemming from a Premiership clash at St James's Park in October.

Fencing : Nottingham Open

Just an indication that this event is getting filled up quite quickly as it's an Open Event. In fact, I think some weapons are already fool so if, like me, you're slow to get applications in, now is definitely the time.

Yakubu jinx

Anyone who saw Soccer AM last Saturday will have seen Lovely and co singing the praises of Yakubu, highlighting the fact that he has only ever missed one penalty - 16 out of 17, something like that.

So with that jinx well and truly set-up he missed two against Bristol City on Tuesday night.

At least Arsenal share around the spot-kick gaffs!

The old days! :

Hopefully it was a blip - just to give keepers a chance.

He's normally so cool and just waits for the keeper to move and places it in the opposite corner.

Maybe he only likes penalties in the league! Be interesting to see if he scores his next one.

Guildford Spectrum

A couple of my friends were in the 1,000 capacity crowd to watch Team Bath beat Brunel Hurricanes 52-28 last night.

Shame about the result but it is great that netball is getting this sort of coverage and appeal.

Beats the 5 or 6 people that come and watch our lot of a weekend!

Bog snorkelling

I had the 'pleasure' of bog snorkelling in Llanwrtyd Wells last year - a nice surprise that my friends threw on me.

On to think you have to pay for the experience as well.

Truly filthy places in which to go bathing, but it is starting to attract a real cult following.

There were teams there from Australia and New Zealand, and some of the participants (from both hemisphere) were taking thing very seriously.

Not that many showers nearby either!
