Having crashed and found himself stranded at the back of the field with the cathedral of Canterbury in sight, Robbie McEwan's dramatic late dash to the line on Stage One of the Tour de France had some casting their minds back to Irishman's Stephen Roche's dramatic Alpine ascent back in this very Tour, 20 years ago.
True, crossing Galibier and the Madeleine with a horror finish at La Plagne probably inflicts more mental and physical discomfort than Southborough Hill, but don't tell David Millar that.
Our very own King of the Mountains - and may it continue long into Stage Two, todays 168.5km trip from Dunkerque to Gand, in Belgium.
