Boonen booted

Like most others, the BBC was caught out by a somewhat farcical finish to Stage Two in Ghent, with the 'Beckham of Belgium', Tom Boonen, narrowly pipped at the post by compatriate and team-mate Gert Steegmans.

A mass pile-up at the finish included yellow jersey holder Fabian Cancellaro, but he retains the overall lead as the crash came inside the final 3km, meaning that all riders received the same time.

Echoes of '87

Having crashed and found himself stranded at the back of the field with the cathedral of Canterbury in sight, Robbie McEwan's dramatic late dash to the line on Stage One of the Tour de France had some casting their minds back to Irishman's Stephen Roche's dramatic Alpine ascent back in this very Tour, 20 years ago.

True, crossing Galibier and the Madeleine with a horror finish at La Plagne probably inflicts more mental and physical discomfort than Southborough Hill, but don't tell David Millar that.
