Merida Marathon (and other stuff)

Well, that was a bit of a git wasn't it??

Congratulations to anyone who took part in (never mind finished) the Penrith Mountain Marathon. I finally limped home after 6 1/2 hours for the full marathon and felt fairly pleased with myself. Until I found out that Liam Killeen did it in under four hours!

As Carrie says more and more riders appearing on our regular jaunts now the weather has picked up. Chopwell is back to its best now it has dried out and we are off to Hamsterly tomorrow for a change of scenery. We have a trip planned to Guisbrough woods in the near future and some sketchy plans for day trips to the lakes/Stanes, so all is good.

Bike wise, I now have my Ellsworth Epiphany up and running and am loving every minute riding it. Still have some final tweaks to make to get it perfect, but it is as near as dammit. Photos will be forthcoming when I get the proper chainset on it (long story).

Update...

Well I haven't been able to get this site to load for ages so it probably seems like nothing's happened with the group!

Not the case.

I'm back on the bike now after an 8 week break due to a broken collarbone and have returned with renewed vigour and determination (I actually managed to ride some steps yesterday - just little ones but I was chuffed!)

Some of the group is heading to Penrith this coming weekend for the Merida Marathon so good luck to whichever of us participate... (I bagsy your free t-shirt Gordon!)

Chopwell has still been a regular ride and numbers seem to be picking up again (flippin' fairweather riders...) and there seems to be a few new folk interested in coming along too so we'll no doubt keep this blog posted!

I love snow riding when it's the fresh and fluffy stuff :-) The hard almost frozen stuff is a bit of a bugger though!

Bring me more broth please.

Riding over last few weeks(posted mon 5th feb)

It's been a bit quiet over the last few weeks. The night riding on tuesdays is down to just 2 or 3 turning up, Nathan, Gian and myself being the 3. I reckon there is a few scared of the dark and the mud ;-) Nathan and myself did however show John Moore around Chopwell the week before last. John is a STW regular who visits the NE every now and then through work, have ridden with him a few times. It's always good to catch up with him, hopefully he'll be back up in march, catch you then John.

There hasn't been any group rides either for ther last few weeks. The last big weekend away was a WMB forum ride in the Lakes over the festive period. Hopefully we'll sort this out and get something organised soon.

Paid a visit to Hamseterley last weekend with Nathan to watch a friend of his, Angela, compete in her first DH race. Big respect to her for racing in awful conditions, and a big well done on coming 3rd in her first race.

Cheers to Paul for a good ride upto Park Head cafe last thursday, really enjoyed it, and what a cracking day weather wise(has spring arrived aleady?).

Good to here both Jack and Stu will be back out with us soon as well. The pair have been absent for a couple of month for different reasons, but both are back on the bike now. Good stuff.

A big congratulations to Jack and his missus as well on the news that the their first little one is on the way, great news mate.

Anyone up for a night ride Friday Feb 16th? The Beamish Oddsox are coming to Chopwell, it would be rude not to join them for a ride and a pint :-)

Also, who is up for the Merida's, entries are open now. Penrith and Selkirk for me. The legs are beginning to hurt just thinking about it!

Penrith and Selkirk Merida's for me too Gordon, and Fozzybear's trying to talk me into one of the Welsh ones too but it's a bit too far unless there's enough of us going to fill a car.

Riding this week 07/01/07

Been a pretty busy week for riding. Did Chopwell last sunday as well as tuesday(see the Annual Chopwell Mudfest blog).Wednesday, Steve and myself were in North Yorkshire being guided by a friend of Steve's, Richard. It was a quality 25mile loop of the NY moors finest that he showed us. I had a real bad day where every inch of ground was painfully gained(the 20 odd mile night ride i did the night before didn't help!). Respect goes out to Richard though as he nailed both Steve and myself on every climb and he was on a singlespeed! Some pics are up now on both here and flickr. Friday, saw a quick blast on the cross bike(i really do love that bike, its so damn fast) and saturday was spent at Chopwell(again!). Had a pretty big stack though at Chopwell on saturday, managed to crash into a bike that was blown over by the wind at the top of a jump just as i was about to hit the lip(talk about bad timing). Landed on my head and suffered a few cuts and bruises but that was all. Nathan caught it on film and almost got wiped out by my bike in the process. It can be viewed here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdj7sGxDXNo

It doesn't really do it justice but have a laugh at my misfortune anyway.

Again Gordon, I'm so sorry for abusing my telekinetic powers just as you hit the lip. I won't do it again. Good stack though!!

The Annual Chopwell Mudfest...

...officially took place on Tuesday 9th January 2007. My god I've never known Choppers so slippery and mushy. I think even the greatest of winter tyres would've struggled at times in that, so needless to say my Conti Explorers didn't do a good job of getting me through without slippage.
The ride was kept short due to a couple of us being knackered and lights running out and the terrible conditions in general, but it was still a good ride and as always I was glad I made the effort.

I really love my riding buddies (o:

And all your buddies love your muffins..I mean you:-)

Mud what mud? That was just a mere damp squidge on the trails on tuesday night ;-)

It was great fun on tuesday slipping, sliding and falling off(great wipe out Nathan) on the way round chops. I really do like winter night riding, really helps improve the bike handling skills(and i need the practice).

The best bit though is the great company and Cazz's muffins....Mmmmmmmmm

Coast run Thursday 4th Jan 2007

The first day ride of the year for me, and the first of hopefully many more longer rides out. I think we ended up doing about 25 miles in total, starting off at South Gosforth and working our way gradually down to Seaton Sluice and back again. Sounds nice and easy, but with the wind beating against you it's a tad more difficult than that!

Great ride though lads, I really enjoyed it. I'm still amazed at the wealth of trails that I never knew existed so close to home, I'm trying to pay attention to where they all go and how they all link together but you know me - I'll never remember!!

I've still got saddle sores from the ride too. Worth it though.
