Description
Colchester United are a relatively recent club in historical terms, only being formed in 1937. The U's first ever competitive game was on August 28th 1937 against Yeovil & Petters United. In 1950, when Divison 3 was expanded by two clubs, Colchester United were voted in along with Gillingham.
In the Eighties Colchester appeared a solid Division Four team, but towards the end of the decade cracks began to appear in the club and two flirtations with relegation saw them down to the Conference on the second of them in 1990.
By 1998 Steve Wignall had taken them up to Division Two(now League One) through the play-offs. They then went on to win promotion to the Championship in 2005/06 season.
