Description
Colchester United are a relatively recent club in historical terms, only being formed in 1937. The U's first ever competitive game was on August 28th 1937 against Yeovil & Petters United. In 1950, when Divison 3 was expanded by two clubs, Colchester United were voted in along with Gillingham.

In the Eighties Colchester appeared a solid Division Four team, but towards the end of the decade cracks began to appear in the club and two flirtations with relegation saw them down to the Conference on the second of them in 1990.

By 1998 Steve Wignall had taken them up to Division Two(now League One) through the play-offs. They then went on to win promotion to the Championship in 2005/06 season.

Directions
Car:
Leave the A12 at Stanway (signposted the A1124), and get into the right hand lane, turning right at the next roundabout. Take the exit into London Road (signposted Mersea/Stanway). Go over the mini-roundabout and travel one mile to a set of traffic lights. At the traffic lights, you need to be in the right hand lane. Turn right into Straight Road. Follow that road right to the end. At that roundabout, turn left and then take a sharp right into the right hand lane. Turn right into Gosbecks Road. Straight over the first roundabout and at the second roundabout turn left. You are now in Layer Road.
